The Foundation the News grants eight scholarships

“When they asked to me as a child that it wanted to be, always it responded: I want to be doctor. Now I feel that I approach this goal more and more and happy and I am been thankful by this opportunity”, said Thin Jose, one of the eight Latin students that received a scholarship of study by $2,500 granted by the Foundation the News, thanks to the bottoms of BI-LO Charities. Thin it studies Biology in the UNC Charlotte at the moment.

The ceremony of delivery of these scholarships took place Wednesday 24 of June in Tate Hall in the Power station Piedmont Community College (CPCC) with the presence of representatives of this educative house, of the government, family and friendly of the winners.

“Thanks to the generosity of BI-LO Charities, we have been able to award the hard work of you who are exceptional students. They continue with its passion by the education, hard work to develop to its minds and spirits and dream in great, who the dreams become reality”, said Hilda Gurdián, president of the Foundation the News, that was the teacher of ceremonies next to Elisa Rodriguez-Gordon, president of the Board of directors of the Foundation the News.

Pride of its community
The representative of the CPCC, Dra. Marcia Conston, vice-president of admission and services congratulated student and gave them three advice: “They continue planning its future, they continue preparing itself and finally they continue persisting until reaching its dreams”.

In representation of the mayor of Charlotte and present candidate to the mayorship, John Lassiter, also congratulated the students, but also he wanted to celebrate the support of the parents of these young people, to those who he asked to put itself standing up to give a applause them. “We recognize its profits, character and leadership and in the future is its obligation to improve the community in which they live with the talent that you are developing”, Lassiter said.

Finally the executive director of BI-LO Charities, Carol HasBrouck Browning, stressed her responsibility to help them the following generations, as they were receiving the support for their education.

Latin exceptional
“We have a great group of young people who in the future are going to be excellent professionals in areas of the health, international businesses, studies and cinematography”, emphasized Rodriguez-Gordon.

Laura Aryan is a young American of Colombian parents who is studying Political Sciences and International Studies in the UNC Chapel Hill. “I am happy for being here and for having the support of these organizations and my family, coverall my mother who always has had great expectations for my. I am going to travel to Mexico like part of my international studies”.

Sara Garci'a studies Human and Dietetic Nutrition in the UNC Greensboro. In the area of the health Sendy Mogollón she follows the race of infirmary in University Queens.

Brown Sem received a rank of associate in sciences in the CPCC, studies Biology in University Queens, its goal is to be dentist. “I did much work extracurricular and I knew that there was much to explore in the educative system. I have had many experiences that have challenged my capacity but also they have modeled my character and that I am going to achieve my objectives. I must be thankful for the support of my parents and the Foundation the News and BI-LO Charities to believe in my”.

Jonathan Kings Moon studies psychology and art in the University of Queens, whereas Andres Rodriguez is preparing to be a professional in the area of the businesses and trade in the UNC Charlotte.

Loreanne Man studies cinematographic production and was the one in charge to present/display the gift done to Hilda Gurdián by its work to the benefit of the Latin students by means of university scholarships.

“My great satisfaction is knowledge that is going to graduate as the university, where I hope to be to give my congratulations them”, said the director of the News.


They approve state proposal against the harassment scholastic

The House of Representatives approved the 23 of June the law proposal that prohibits the abuse against school students. Carolina of the North ones was one of the 11 states that a policy of this type did not have.

Policy of protection
The called law “The School Violence Prevention Act” declares that the scholastic abuse includes acts realized by a person motivated by: the race, the color, the religion, the family, the nationality, the sort, estátus socioeconomic, the identity of sort, the physical appearance, the sexual or mental direction, the physical incapacity, of sensorial development or or the association with a person who has one of these characteristics.

The law requires that the professors, students and volunteers report any problem of psychological or physical abuse and lets to criterion of each scholastic system the procedures to punish these actions of the students and to the professors or directors who do not report it.

The new law will indicate to all the scholastic systems that still they do not have a policy, that adopt one before the 31 of December.

At local level
The Department of Public Instruction of the state already had asked to all the scholastic districts to have a policy against the harassment scholastic although they forgot many them.

This it is not the case of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) that the 11 of March of the 2008 approved a policy of prevention against the scholastic abuse.

CMS was one of the first scholastic districts of the state in adopting a policy of this nature. This internal regulation proposes a specific list of the groups that are protected, as well as to establish programs of training in all the district to make fulfill the policy and create an atmosphere of understanding and respect to all the individuals.

The superintendent of CMS, Dr. Peter Gorman said that it is an important iniviativa stops to that all the students learn in an pleasant and safe atmosphere. The plan of prevention of scholastic abuse in CMS is called “Security and respect for all”.

By means of this plan, professors and administrative personnel of the schools have participated in sessions of training on the awareness against the scholastic abuse, strategies of intervention, ciberbullying (or abuse by Internet), legal consequences or lack to make fulfill the policy and resources of information for the parents.
